How to Use Your Massage Benefits Before They Reset: A Calgary Guide

December: your calendar is full, your patience is thin, and your shoulders have taken up permanent residence beside your ears. That massage you keep meaning to book? Still on the “I’ll get around to it” list.

If your massage benefits reset January 1, check what’s left and whether unused coverage carries over. Then move that massage from “I really should” to “See you Tuesday.” This guide covers checking your benefits, planning your appointments and asking about direct billing at Why Knot! Your to-do list gets plenty of attention. Your body deserves some too.

Know Your Benefits’ Reset Date

Your massage coverage may have a limit for each benefit year. If unused coverage doesn’t carry over, the reset date is your deadline to use it. Think “use it or lose it”—but check your plan’s rules before assuming.

If your plan follows the calendar year, coverage resets January 1. Other plans use a different schedule, so December 31 isn’t everyone’s deadline. Check your benefits booklet or insurer’s app, or contact your plan administrator to confirm yours.

Have a health spending account (HSA)? Check its rules separately. Carryover options and deadlines depend on how your account is set up. Your HR team or plan administrator can confirm what carries forward and when you need to submit expenses. A quick check now beats an unpleasant surprise later.

How Much Massage Coverage Do You Have?

Your coworker’s coverage might be excellent. Yours might be completely different. Check your own plan for its annual massage limit, the percentage it reimburses and any maximum per visit. Also check whether massage has its own allowance or shares one with services such as physiotherapy and chiropractic care.

The amount remaining is only part of the picture. Knowing how much your plan pays toward each appointment helps you budget for your share and plan your visits. A little benefits detective work now means fewer surprises at checkout. No magnifying glass required.

What to look for in your plan

  • Your annual maximum for massage therapy
  • The percentage your plan reimburses per visit
  • Any per-visit dollar limit or limit on the number of visits
  • Whether you need a doctor's referral (some plans require one)
  • Your plan's reset date
  • Whether massage shares a combined coverage limit with other services

Why You Need a Registered Massage Therapist

When you’re booking with benefits in mind, your therapist’s credentials matter. Check that your insurer recognizes the Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) you choose and that you meet your plan’s requirements. A fantastic massage and an eligible insurance claim aren’t automatically the same thing.

Before booking, ask your insurer whether it recognizes your therapist’s professional association and whether your plan requires a doctor’s referral. We can provide your therapist’s association and membership details to help you check. A little homework, yes—but considerably less annoying than a rejected claim.

At Why Knot!, we provide electronic receipts with your therapist’s registration details for your insurance submission. Have questions about what your plan covers? Confirm with your insurer before your appointment, then come in knowing where you stand. We’ll take it from there.

Direct Billing Makes It Even Easier

You booked a massage to deal with your knots, not wrestle with insurance paperwork. Good news: Why Knot! now offers direct billing with participating insurers. One less thing on your plate.

We submit your claim for you. When your plan approves payment directly to us, your insurer covers the eligible amount and you pay any remaining balance. If the claim needs further review or payment goes to you instead, you may need to pay in full and receive reimbursement from your insurer.

Want to know whether we can direct bill your insurer? Email hello@whyknot.ca with “INSURANCE INFO” in the subject line and tell us who you’re covered with. We’ll check the direct billing options; your insurer can confirm your plan’s coverage.

5 Steps to Use Your Benefits Before Year-End

  1. Check your balance. Log in to your insurer's app or member portal, or call the number on your benefits card, to see how much massage coverage you have left.
  2. Confirm your reset date. Make sure you know exactly when your plan year ends. Not every plan resets on January 1.
  3. Ask about direct billing. Email hello@whyknot.ca with “INSURANCE INFO” in the subject line and your insurer’s name. We’ll check whether we can bill them directly.
  4. Book early. Your favourite therapist’s calendar won’t politely wait for you to finish your holiday shopping. Book ahead for the best chance of getting the day, time and therapist you prefer.
  5. Plan a series, not just one visit. Make a plan that suits your body. Talk with your therapist about your goals and whether follow-up appointments would be useful. Plan around your needs, remaining coverage and budget—your benefits are there to support your care.

Which Massage Should You Book?

You don’t need a degree in massage terminology to book with us. Choose your appointment length, browse our therapists’ bios and bring us your “this bit is driving me nuts.” You and your therapist will discuss your goals and decide on the approach together. Here are a few options you might explore:

  • Deep tissue massage focuses on deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It's a good fit for chronic tension and stubborn knots.
  • Relaxation (Swedish) massage uses gentle, flowing strokes to help you unwind before the holidays.
  • Hot stone massage uses heated basalt stones to warm and relax your muscles. It's perfect for cold Calgary winters.
  • Sports massage supports recovery for runners, skiers, hockey players and weekend warriors.
  • Pregnancy massage offers gentle, supportive care for expecting parents.
  • TMJ treatment targets tension in the jaw and surrounding muscles, which is often linked to stress and clenching.

Every session is tailored to you—your goals, your comfort and what needs attention that day. Our team also offers techniques such as cupping, trigger point therapy, myofascial release and reflexology. For hot stone, prenatal, cupping or jaw-focused treatment, choose a therapist who offers that service. Unsure who to book? Ask us. Matching guests with therapists is rather our thing.

Your Benefits Reset. Your Body Doesn’t.

Unused coverage might get you through the door, but your body is the reason you’re here. Mayo Clinic notes that massage may help reduce stress, ease muscle pain and tension, and support relaxation. Talk with your therapist about what you need, whether that’s attention to a troublesome area or time to finally exhale.

Between shopping, travel, hosting and pretending you’re delighted by every festive obligation, December asks a lot of you. Put yourself on the calendar too. You don’t have to finish everyone else’s to-do list before you’re allowed to take care of yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's note for my massage to be covered?

It depends on your plan. Many plans don't require one, but some do. Check your benefits booklet or call your insurer before your appointment.

Does unused massage coverage roll over to next year?

Check your plan before counting on it. Your benefits booklet or plan administrator can confirm whether unused massage coverage carries over. If you have a health spending account, check its carryover rules and claim deadlines separately.

Can I use my spouse's benefits too?

If you’re covered under both plans, ask your insurer about “coordination of benefits.” It will explain which plan pays first and how to submit any remaining eligible expense to the second plan. Being married isn’t enough—you need to be covered under your spouse’s plan too!

Does Why Knot! direct bill my insurance?

We offer direct billing with participating insurers. Email hello@whyknot.ca with “INSURANCE INFO” in the subject line and your insurer’s name, and we’ll check whether we can bill them directly. Your plan determines how much is covered and whether payment can come directly to us.
